Cantaloupe, Brown Sugar and Wisteria

Sounds like a weird recipe doesn't it?  Well, it would be if we were talking about the fruit, the sweetener and the flower.  Instead, these are the colors for this week's Splitcoaststampers color challenge.

The challenge was super easy for me this week as I had already embossed this piece of Crisp Cantaloupe Coredinations cardstock and stamped the image when I was visiting Karen over the 4th.  She is so generous with her tools and supplies and I love using the Big Shot and new stamps while I'm there.  I just had to add color and matting.

The stamp set is Cherish Friendship.  I colored the chair with markers and watercolor crayons.  To get the twine colored, I used a Darlene DeVries technique.  Add ink to your craft mat, spray with water and then roll some white twine around in the mixture until dyed.  The 'dessert' this week is to use a clip so my clip is from Tim Holtz.

I also did the coloring and assembly for this card I stamped and embossed at Karen's.  I'm not sure what stamp set this image is from but I really like it. It is delicate but not so small that I can't control the blender pen.  The blue cardstock is Island Indigo, now part of the Regals collection.

Speaking of all these great colors, yesterday I posted about my updated cardstock deck.  I had to update as Stampin' Up! has added some new colors and brought back a lot of older In Colors.  Here's the post.

Christmas in July clallenge

A few days ago, I shared my first card with Raisin Boat rental stamps.  Here is card from another set called Elf Express.  They have several sets with these adorable little elves.  One challenge I've had with their stamps is finding a black ink that stamps well and doesn't bleed with my water-based markers and watercolor crayons. I experimented at Karen's with Momento and Ranger Archival ink pads she had.  The Archival Ink did the best job overall as it is permanent and doesn't bleed when water is applied.  I wish the Momento had worked and it did for Stampin' Up! markers on SU! cardstock.  However, it ran on watercolor paper with watercolor products.  It certainly gives a fantastic impression though.

Anyway, I stamped a few of these and now I think I'll do some more.  This did not take nearly as long to color as I'd anticipated.  I'm not a really fussy color-er.  If I stay between the lines, I'm happy.

The ladies at Raisin Boat use a product called Liquid Applique for their 'snow.'  Jo Ann's carries it on-line but not in the store.  At Michaels they sold me a puffy white paint (from back in the t-shirt section) that works great and is very inexpensive.

The little trees on the right are also part of the set as is the greeting.  I added some Versamark and clear embossed the 2nd layer of gumball green cardstock behind the image.

The card came together quickly as I was following the sketch and color challenges this week at Splitcoaststampers.   Mary, our hostess, chose the colors Gumball Green, Cherry Cobbler, and Crumb Cake (kraft).   Dessert option was a Christmas themed card.  That was easy as I really wanted to try out this fun set - Elf Express.

2010-2012 In Colors

A new Stampin' Up! catalog term begins next month and so do new In Colors.  So five In Colors are retiring including the ones in this card - Peach Parfait, Pear Pizzazz and Blush Blossom.  I used Splitcoast stampers sketch for my layout.

The 'berries' are some pink stickles in this very simple card.  My challenge was to make a card using the only one of these In Colors I had the ink for.  I have paper in all the colors but only liked one of them enough to buy the ink - Pear Pizzazz.

Tomorrow I'll have another card and some thoughts on the new catalog.

Triple task card

This simple little card fits two challenges and is one of my stamp class cards for May.  The other three projects I have for class have a lot going on so I needed something quick to wrap up the night.

I love this week's color challenge at Splitcoast stampers to use More Mustard, Pool Party and Espresso.  I subbed Papertrey Ink's Hawaiian Shores for Pool Party. It is close and matched my ribbon better.  Also, I used the sketch challenge for the week for the layout.

I'm having more TMJ troubles again after so many great months (arrgh!) so I'm off to try my hand at making a smoothie without bananas.  I love bananas but they don't love me.  Mangos have been suggested as a substitute for bananas.  I've looked at a lot of recipes and it seems people just throw whatever they have on hand into the blender.  We'll see...

Circles, circles!

Splitcoaststampers has a cool sketch this week with tons of circles! I haven't been doing many card challenges lately and it has been ages since I did both the sketch and color challenge at Splitcoast.  Mary selected Old Olive, Tangerine Tango and Daffodil Delight for our cheery color palette.  You can see her card here.

For my card, I used some new chevron designer paper combined with some Jillibean soup papers.  The stamps are from Stampin' Up!  Petal Pizzazz was one I took on my crafting weekend and had just put away. I knew it would be perfect for all these circles.  Some of the white circles looked a little plain so I added a cardstock circle edge.  All are cut with my Creative Memories circle cutters.

Speaking of challenges, this weekend Shimelle.com is hosting an on-line scrapbooking weekend with challenges that extend into the following week. I've got quite a few photos all ready for whatever Shimelle throws our way.

For now, I've got to go out and cover a bunch of plants.  After weeks without the temps dropping below 40, we are under a freeze warning tonight!

Red, White and Aqua

You must think I turned a few too many calendar pages at once.  Last month I was doing Christmas cards and this looks a lot like a Valentine.  It is a Valentine set but I think it could be a thank you or love card.  Don't worry, one step outside and I know it is still a very humid summer.

I chose this stamp to go with my polka dot background and the color scheme of Red, White and Aqua for another of Shimelle's challenges.  For the background, I stamped the polka dots with regular classic Real Red ink and then went over a few of them with Versamark and some Iridescent Ice embossing powder.  I used Ranger's Glossy Accents on a few more dots to give the background a little punch.

I told my friends at card class this week that I've got to go to the fabric store and stock up on some ric rack. I'm out of just about every color. This was the last of the red.

TIPsy Tuesday - Coloring Perfect Pearls

In the pink again!  This time it is for the Splitcoast stampers weekly color challenge.  It has been awhile since I did one of those.  The colors are Melon Mambo, Crumb Cake (kraft) and Soft Suede.  Since I'm not a neutral person that means a lot of Melon Mambo.  I stretched it with a bit of shading.

The background was created by pressing my ink pad on my Ranger craft sheet and then spraying the ink with water before soaking the paper. Stampin' Up! Classic Ink pads work very much like distress inks.

To give the flowers a little shine, I used some Perfect Pearls but the only color I have is white, so...

I mixed a drop of liquid pearls from Ranger and a drop of Rose Red Craft Ink (I don't have Melon Mambo ink refill) and then painted it on the center of the flowers.  It gives a nice little glisten effect.

Splitcoast Color Challenge Card

Mary gave us some of my favorite bright colors for this week's Splitcoaststampers color challenge.  Unfortunately this was one of those days that everything I envisioned didn't quite come out as planned.  I had these polka dot stamps (surprise!) out for one of my efforts.  I can't believe in all the time I've had these stamps I've never layered the open circle and the closed circles.  Duh!  It makes a great effect.  Now I'm thinking of all the ways I can make my own tone-on-tone backgrounds with them.

Anyway, for this background I did the Pacific Point for the outlines and the Daffodil Delight for the insides.  A little very simple paper piecing and we'll call it done.  Now I'd better clean up my work table. It looks like I've had every stamp set in my collection out!

Tomorrow I have a scrapbook layout and I promise there isn't a polka dot stamp in sight!

My SU! experience - then and now

First, today's card.

We have card class coming up and I have mostly floral cards for the group to make.  So I thought we needed a masculine card and I turned to the old favorite little truck stamp which most of the ladies have in their collection also known as Loads Of Love.  Splitcoaststamper’s color challenge this week is to use Pear Pizzazz, Baja breeze, and Poppy Parade - such happy colors.  I also used the sketch challenge turned up on its end.  In place of the circles which would probably be brads or buttons I embroidered X’s for some extra love on this simple card.

Doing this card using all Stampin Up supplies fit in well with one of my first activities this morning which was looking back two years on my blog.  Now that sounds like something strange to do.  It came from Shimelle’s prompt from the Blogging for Scrapbookers class.  She suggested that we use our blogs if we’ve been doing this a long time to see how things have changed in the last year or two years or whatever.  A blog is a great way to find something by date.

So I went back to April 2009 which was shortly after I started my blog.  It was also shortly after I began my few months as a stamping up demonstrator.  I was pretty passionate about stamping and using Stampin’ up! products.  Now I still loved to use other manufacturers’ paper but I had not ventured out into a lot of different kinds of inks.  I was trying to encourage others to stamp, just starting to participate in challenges, and just beginning to teach some card making classes.

Now two years later I still use a lot of my Stampin Up collection of stamps and the inks and markers.  I use their cards stock almost exclusively now except for a little bit of Papertrey Ink.  I have though expanded the variety of stamps and inks in my collection.  I’m a pretty brand loyal person however I like a lot of variety in my crafts.  I get bored pretty quickly and I find that has increased as I’ve gotten older.  For example when I was younger I loved to crochet and while I tried out a lot of different patterns I had some that I would make over and over again.

Now I find that I want to try more and more new techniques, scrapbooking layouts, scrapbooking subjects.  I love to watch videos on techniques and see what I can learn.  I’m not as adventuresome as some of you but I really like to stretch my style.

While I didn’t really like trying to sell Stampin Up, I am very grateful for my time as a demonstrator.  When I had to meet a quarterly minimum, I gave myself permission to spend a bit more money on my crafts –cutting back in other places to do so.  I realized how important paper crafting was to me.  I had to produce quite a bit of product –cards and pages to show to perspective clients.  So I really increased how much I got done in my crafting space and that has carried over even though I’m not trying to sell anything anymore.

I still teach some classes.  We use a lot of SU materials but of course we use a lot of other products as well.

Whereas I was just getting started entering card challenges, I now enter several challenges a month many of them for scrapbook pages.  I make a lot more one page layouts these days.

I really think that blogging, reading other blogs, watching You tube videos, participating on message boards has helped me grow as a crafter.  I’m very thankful to all the wonderful crafters I connect with online.

Birdie Blues

Just could not resist doing the color challenge at Splitcoaststampers this week!  All blues and greens, my favorites!  The dessert option was birds and I used this week's sketch challenge as well.

This pretty, and rather old, designer paper was already in two of the colors:  Baja Breeze and Certainly Celery.  I stamped the bird with two shades of blue - Baja and Colorbox's Prussian Blue which is a slightly darker shade than Marina Mist.  Then I colored in the flowers with a green pencil.

A Matter of Moments challenges card

To meet both the color challenge of Baja (which I can never resist), Soft Suede and Crumb Cake and the sketch challenge at Splitcoaststampers, I have this card using some stamps on the top of my baskets.  We used these same ones in card class this week.

I'm not sure about this blue bow yet.

Project Notes:
The woodgrain background is done in Versamark to keep it really light.

To tie in this pretty Making Memories ribbon a little more, I added a French knot using DMC embroidery floss.  I doubt I'll ever embark on another crewel embroidery project but it is nice to know those skills won't go to waste even if I did have to give it a couple tries before I remembered how to do this. :-)

The Baja stamped image is stamped off to give it a very light background for the message.

Rose Artichoke and Plum color challenge

Lately, I've been obsessed with spritzing!

Splitcoaststampers color challenge this week is to use Rose Red, Always Artichoke and Perfect Plum.  I played with my watercolor crayons.   For part of the stamped image, I colored the stamp directly with watercolor crayon and then spritzed with water.  I stamped on watercolor paper.  At first I thought I'd have a mess but it dried nice and, well, watercolor-like.  I used some regular ink to stamp the complimentary images.

I didn't have any Rose or Plum ribbon but I did have some Rose Red spritz I had mixed up over the weekend in some of my experiments.  I wanted to see if you could create a mist with pigment (Craft) ink and water just like you can with dye (classic) ink.  You can, it doesn't spritz quite as smoothly since the pigment ink isn't as water soluable as the dye ink.  Still it does the job.

So for the "ribbon,"  I ripped off a piece of muslin and spritzed it thoroughly with rose red mixed in water.  After drying, the ink does not come off on your hands. Of course this would not be waterproof so it is fine for papercraft projects but not for any fabric projects that are going to get wet.

Simply Thanks

It's been awhile since I got in a card challenge.  This card is for two challenges at Splitcoaststampers.  The color challenge this week is to use Pacific Point, So Saffron and Wild Wasabi.  I have none of that green in paper or ink so I used just a touch of Garden Green and there is a little green in the twine which was the desert option for the challenge.

What I found most difficult was the sketch.  Sometimes, layering simple rectangles gives me the most grief.  I got all my colors in on one layer and then found it tough to make the rest work without being overpowering.  I'm really pleased with my tone-on-tone square stamped directly on the background.  I created a mask with a rectangle cut out and then stamped inside the rectangle.  Faux stitching in the same color ink finished it off.

I'll have several other cards to post in the next few days.  We have card class tonight focusing on using small stamps.  Better get set up.

Sweet and Not so much

Isn't this a sweet little card I CASEd from the Stampin' Up! 2010-11 Idea Book?  The colors are for the Splitcoast challenge this week.  I've used the Sweet Little Sentiments stamp set for the message.  However, there weren't many sweet little sentiments being said in my craft room while I was making it.

This was one of those days when the glue would only come out of the bottle in great globs or not at all and when the Cricut refused to cut intricate details.  My cupcake had 'sprinkles' until I stuck my thumb in the Stickles so I just had to smear all of it around.  I assembled everything and had forgotten to stamp "Birthday" so I hand wrote it - no way to get the Stamp-a-ma-jig placed at that point.  I got the background paper crooked which require the extra scalloped border, then I trimmed off to much on the corner so I had to corner punch it.  I cut the ribbon too short and ended up with very frayed edges with what was left.  And of course the great globs of glue leaked out from behind the letters.

Toward the last of this project, my husband popped into my craft room with one of those 'what's for dinner' questions.  (I had made lunch that day for him and my parents who he invited without asking me - not that I mind but it is nice to get some notice.)  So more less-than-sweet sentiments followed that question.

It is a wonder this cute little card survived and even more of a wonder that I'd like to make it again - when I'm having a better day.

Simple Kissed Flowers

I must be stamping virgin.  I've never kissed!

At least I don't think I've ever done the kissing technique for stamping.  It is the technique for this week's Clean and Simple cards at Splitcoast Stampers.  Pals Paper Arts challenge is to use the new Pear Pizzazz, Baja Breeze and Perfect Plum.

The two stamps I kissed are large flower stamps from two different Stampin' Up sets. I inked up the open flower design in Plum and inked the solid flower from Petal Pizzazz in Baja, press together and Voila!

For the background flower, I had to cheat a little to get it large enough to show.  After stamping in Perfect Plum and 'kissing' with a polka dot stamp, I cut out the image and then snipped each petal separately.

I then adhered the petals to another circle of cardstock so a slightly larger flower would peek out the back of the top flower.

A pearl and a sentiment wrap up this very simple card.

Masculine Note Card

Why are making masculine cards so difficult?  Is it just me?  Perhaps it is that I have so few stamps that lend themselves to masculine cards.  I just love flowers and birds but then my husband loves flowers and likes birds well enough so maybe it is my interpretation of what is masculine.  He must like birds, he waded through the snow to feed ours today, bless him.

Anyway, the Splitcoaststampers color challenge was to use Night of Navy, Old Olive, Daffodil Delight (I had to sub So Saffron) and a button or brad (I used a grommet).  The inspiration was Mary's husband's birthday.  Happy Birthday!

I did two of these cards and will use them as Any Hero cards in my next OWH box.  I thought the yellow ribbon would signify a hope that the heroes who receive them will be home soon.

Project Notes:

• The branch is embossed in Night of Navy on watercolor paper
• the background is my favorite technique from Jennifer McGuire's Holiday Thinking Inking class at Two Peas.  If you haven't taken this, it is wonderful!  She used Ranger inks but I used SU!'s inks, even Craft ink worked.  You ink up an acrylic block, spray with water and then coat your paper.  It takes a couple of coats and some dabbing but it is a lot of fun.
• The edge is distressed in Soft Suede.

Have to be off.  My dad is accompanying me on a business errand this morning.  He is off from work this week and going a little stir crazy.  (I think my mother will appreciate the break, too.)

TIPsy Tuesday - Tone-on-Tone Strips

With making and sending holiday cards and trying to get a scrapbook completed, I haven't had as much time for general card making.  This one is for the color challenge at Splitcoaststampers.  The colors this week are Going or Basic Grey, Marina Mist and Concord Crush.  I had to sub some ink colors since I don't have these new ones but I got pretty close.  I love Going Gray and was so sorry to see it get discontinued. 

For this card, I gave the gray background a two tone striped background.  Here's how:

Cut strips of paper in even widths.  Mine are 1 1/8" which is the width of the small wheel I planned to use in between my darker solid stripes.  Adhere strips with removable adhesive at even intervals - in my case 1 1/8".

Ink the open spaces with Versamark.  I pressed my pad directly onto the cardstock repeatedly to get a good coverage.  Coat with clear embossing powder.  REMOVE strips to get that adhesive away from the heat.  Heat to complete embossing.

Stamp in between as desired.  I stamped with an unmounted wheel in Versamark and embossed.  Here's the result.

To finish the card, I tried some Chalk Ink on a piece of chipboard.  Boy, did it coat!  Like dye ink, it does dry a lighter finish.  The flower is from the Pretties Kit at stampinup.com  Last I checked, this was still available at a greatly reduced price on their clearance rack.

Ribbon and Twine

The color challenge Mary has for us this week at Splitcoaststampers is Real Red, River Rock and Old Olive.  They seemed the right colors for the Home for Christmas set. 

I was just making some 6 1/2" x 3 1/4" cards for those small open end envelopes and used Real Red cardstock as my base for both cards.  Usually a 6 1/2" square really wastes a lot of paper; however the leftovers are perfect for a small square card that fits into a standard A2 envelope.

To jazz this simple card just a little, I tried a border of intertwined twine and red ribbon.  It is ziz zagged in place.  I like the casual effect, just not sure if this was the right card for it.  Anyway, it was a fun experiment.  If you try this, leave extra of the ribbon at the starting and ending points to tie a bow.

TIPsy Tuesday - 4 Steps to great leaves

For today's color challenge at Splitcoaststampers, Mary asked us to use Cajun Craze, Peach Parfait, and Early Espresso - all new to the Stampin' Up! palette.  As new colors, I still don't have all the inks and papers.  I don't have anything in Cajun Craze so I had to use Dusty Durango but I darkened it with watercolor and embossing powder so I hope it will pass :-)  These colors go beautifully together for fall.  I threw in just a touch of kraft (now Crumb Cake) for my neutral to balance the chipboard.

To create the leaves:

1. Cut leaves with a paper cutting system.  I used the Cricut.  You could also trim some out by hand.
2. Score the main veins.  I used my bone folder and a ruler.  This makes the most difference in making them look real.
3. Add some color depth in the vein lines with watercolor crayons in slightly darker shades and a blender pen.
4. Coat each leaf with Versamark, dip in clear embossing powder and heat.  Be sure to use your tweezors!  I edged the lighter Peach Parfait one with a little Early Espresso marker.  You could distress the edges too with some Ranger ink.

Hope you have had a happy day!  I'm so thankful to have card making as a hobby.  I think this may have been the only constructive thing I got done today besides voting.  The repairman came but my stove still needs more parts. We are now on day 15 of no stove... and counting.  I'm to pick up the latest part tomorrow.   We'll see...

For this week's clean and simple cards and the color challenge at Splitcoaststampers, I did this card using the Trendy Trees stamp set.  I loved the clean and simple sketch.  The color challenge was to use Rose Red, Daffodil Delight and Basic Gray.   For dessert we could add any other color.  What a great dessert option as three colors is often a real challenge and this gives us a chance to use discontinued colors.  My choice was Bermuda Bay.  I did have to think a little outside the box for me on the trees and give them Gray trunks.  Ok, that isn't much outside the box, but I'm pretty literal so my trees always have brown trunks.  :-)

Hope you have a great Wednesday.  If you want to relax in front of the TV tonight, check out the Defenders at 10 Eastern on CBS.  I watched last week because I usually enjoy Jim Belushi.  The show was much better than I expected - the characters have more depth.  Definitely worth seeing again.
